In contrast to "receiving the grace of God in vain" (6:1) and putting a stumblingblock before other Christians and unbelievers alike (6:3) by a life not lived agreeably with our profession, the apostle Paul in today's text (vs. 4-7) urges professing Christians to follow him in proving the reality of true faith in hard trials by demonstrating, even there, a Christian life consistent with their profession of having received the grace of God. The apostle and this sermon teach that certain graces (v. 6) will inevitably prevail in authentic Christian experience. The text demands that we ask how we respond to hardships in "approving ourselves" and exhorts all to be especially careful as to how we conduct ourselves in "afflictions, necessities and distresses".
