At some point foundational preaching and teaching on the person and work of Jesus Christ is counter-productive to those hearing it and actually begins to work against them. If this instruction; these messages do not turn you further into Christ... if you don't adjust your will to follow Him and take from Him what He gives you of Himself in the Word... well then all that instruction soon becomes a kind of indistinct background noise. Everything you learn of God's Word must culminate in Christ being everything to you or you have missed its point of everything in God's Word. If from your time before the Word of God you are simply coming away with rules, ethics, personal comforts and affirmations, sentimental encouragements, or doctrinal perches that lead to an intellectual smugness... if this is what you are gaining through your encounter with God's Word than you have missed the point of God's Word.
Our setting in the text in Jerusalem some thirty years after the resurrection of Jesus Christ and that day of Pentecost when filled with the Spirit the church began in a flash of signs and wonders in that very city.
