In this, the second week of our Advent series looking at the prologue to John's gospel we will hear of the light 'which gives light to everyone.' This light 'shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.' At times, the world can seem a dark place. Sometimes we feel surrounded and perhaps even suffocated by it. Closer to home, we are often aware of the dark recesses of our own hearts. It is into such darkness the true light of God shines, giving light and life to all who believe. Sadly, many prefer to stumble and hide in the darkness rather than walk in the light. To these, Jesus says, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." Follow him and believe in him, and you will know, with great relief and joy, that the darkness has not overcome the light.
