In this, the third week of our Advent series, we hear "to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God" (John 1:12). By nature, none of us are children of God, and none of us deserve to be made children of God. In fact, by nature, we are all children of wrath. But the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and died for us as the Lamb of God, that he might take away the sin of the world and give the right to become children of God to all who receive him and believe in his name.
What love! And what a glorious gift and privilege - that we, who by nature were children of wrath, should be called children of God; and that is what we are. As Christmas draws near, may we not ever take the love and grace of God for granted but enter all the more fully into being children of God our Father.
