The scriptures speak of great privileges for the natural descendants of Israel, but in the text of Romans Paul seems to ask rhetorically whether these promises have failed. If God could cut off the covenant people of Israel, who is to say if he could cut off the beloved of Christ. God has revealed His truth to spiritual Israel – not Israel of the bloodline – Israel called according to the promise of redemption. The natural children of Abraham and the children of Isaac are given as examples. If we believe in the bible then we are required to believe in the doctrine of election. Election is not based on the works of man but on the free sovereign will of the eternal God who chooses according to His counsel.
God is not unjust in choosing some and passing by others neither is He under obligation. The Lord’s election is an election of mercy and love upon some. The wonder of God’s electing love is not that He saves some, but the wonder is that He chooses to save any. The Lord saves some and shows wrath to others to bring glory to His own name. The Lord invites all to come to Him to enjoy the great redemption of Christ. For those that do come and taste of His great Love they may rest in the assurance of salvation guaranteed by this great election.
