INTRO: Our subject is the conscience. In the last message we looked at the origin of the conscience. I gave my view that Adam and Eve were not created with a conscience. There was no need for it until after they had sinned. And when they had sinned, they discovered through this 'co-knowledge' they now had that they were naked, and they hid themselves. They had invented a works religion, and sewed fig leaves together to cover their nakedness, and still they were ashamed to show up before God like this. And when God presenced Himself, they were gone. And God said, "Adam, where are you?" Not that God did not know where they were, but sin had come between them. And Adam made confession and said, "I heard Your voice, and I was afraid because I was naked; and I hid myself." There is the work of the conscience. And God said, "Who told you that you were naked?" As I see it, it was that inner voice of the conscience that had told Adam he was naked. That inner voice still talks to us, and we, like Adam and Eve, want to hide.
