In our morning sermon passage this past Lord's Day, we heard from Philippians 3:3-11 and heard the question posed, “Who exactly am I?” We are not our names, our jobs, our callings, our titles. We are not even our gifts and graces. One small accident, illness or life-change can take away these things and yet we are still ourselves. What are we , what is the irreducible core that is truly what we are. In our passage, Paul takes on this question, not simply answering “Who are you?” but “Who are ya'll”, speaking to the whole church. He outlines 3 things that we are that cannot be taken from us because of the gift of God, three things that define us and are perfectly safe-nothing will ever remove them. We are those who put no confidence in the flesh because to any level we do so, we will NOT glory in Jesus Christ. Grace and self-effort cannot be held together. As long as self-effort and self-worth and self-trust is held, Christ is not. And Paul says we are NOT those who trust in the flesh. We glory in Jesus Christ. Who are you? You glory in Jesus Christ. You worship in the Spirit. You are cut off from the world. You put no confidence in the flesh. This can never ever be taken away from you.
