Dearly beloved congregation of our Lord Jesus Christ, the psalm before us is a psalm of resurrection. In it the king speaks of having been in Sheol and being brought up from there — and his response, of course, is fireworks of praise. He has emerged from the silence of the pit into the songs of heaven. After his outburst of praise subsides, he calls on us to join him in praise for his resurrection, and then he explains what led God to raise him from the dead. As we will see, that answer circles right back around to the original theme of praise. One of the major reasons God raised His Son from the dead was so that His Son could lead all of us in worship. That's why we are here — to praise God. We too have been brought out of the realm of the dead into new life in Jesus, and we too must burst into song so that our God can be properly worshiped and glorified for what He has done.
