We are in the second half of the third of the four “Servant Songs” that we find in the book of Isaiah. In the first part of this song the Servant Himself speaks and gives a revealing description of His role in the prophetic office. Remember that the Servant must serve as Prophet, Priest, and King to His people. Now, in the second part of the song, the Servant describes His unwavering confidence in God. It is because of this confidence in God that the Servant is able to faithfully discharge His duty, despite the incredible opposition that will seek to derail Him from His task. I develop this theme by working carefully through the text as given to us by Isaiah. Isaiah himself then closes the discourse with a challenge to both the unbeliever and the believer. I take this opportunity to press home the truth to our hearts. This is an important passage because it reveals more about the person and work of the Servant of the Lord, who we know to be none other than Jesus Christ, the Son of God. May God be pleased to bless the preaching of His word by giving us great insight into the blessed person of the Servant of the Lord!
