Having just concluded the third of the four Servant Songs in Isaiah, God speaks directly to His people. In light of the future work of His true Servant, God has much to say to His people to encourage them. He reminds them about His promised salvation. That's the theme of the first few verses of chapter 51. The audience is the people of God, and He identifies them by certain qualities they possess. He follows that by making an earnest appeal for them to listen to Him, and then to look at specific spiritual realities He draws their attention to. For it is in light of those realities that He reminds them of the certainty of His promise to them. And, so long as they trust Him, they have no need to fear what the nations might do to them. The next few verses are the prayerful response of the people of God to what He has said. Actually this is the prayer of Isaiah, but most scholars view it is being representative of Judah itself. The prayer is instructive for the people of God, and I will highlight its salient points so that we can learn from its example. This is an encouraging passage for us as Christians, and I pray that the lord will bless His holy word.
