The mauling of 42 lads by two bears demonstrates that it is Jehovah and not Baal who is the God of nature. However, the fact that 2 she bears mauled 42 children has been a very perplexing thing to many people however. Many people have wondered why Elisha cursed children and why he did so because of what seems like a very minor thing. They were mocking his bald head. People have said that Elisha must have been a very sensitive and vengeful type of an individual to do what he did. The punishment does not in any way seem to fit the crime. And yet you very much miss the point of this story if you think it is just about a man who was sensitive about his baldness and vengeful against a group of young lads. What we have here is a great warning to sinners and to those who mock God and the things of God. We live in a day when people feel they can mock at anything. They feel they can make light of that which is good and right. There are those who even feel that they can mock at God and the things of God. This story comes as a very powerful warning to our hearts. The 42 lads here who are mentioned in this passage demonstrate that fact God does not look lightly on mockery and disrespect to the things of God.
