The quality and character of a Christian's hope is a very major indicator of his or her spiritual maturity. We are saved "in hope" (Romans 8:24). Hope is to the Christian almost what water is to a fish. We live in an atmosphere of confident expectation--at least we are supposed to. Peter tells us to "hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought." This is not telling us how long to hope--until the end of the age, true as that is. He is talking about the quality of our hope, the constituent parts of our hope. There is one vital imperative in I Peter 1:13--hope: girding up the loins of your mind, and being sober are subordinate phrases informing you how to hope, or we can say, what conditions are to be met if we really live in hope. The hope Peter urges on us will stand up and do battle for you against worry, against sloppy living, against self-pity, and more.
