John 2 marks a division in the gospel of John. Chapters 2 through 11 includes 7 miraculous signs that reveal Jesus' glory. John 20:30-31 John says that Jesus did many signs not written in this book, but these the signs that are included are included so that the reader might believe that Jesus is the Christ, and believing, might have life in his name. Therefore, the question is, why was the sign of turning water into wine included? The key to the answer lies in two things. First, John counts exactly 7 days from John the Baptist's witness to this wedding. This counting is clearly intentional to point to the day of entering God's rest. Second, Jesus said, "My hour has not yet come." Not, "My time has not yet come," but "My hour has not yet come." Christ's hour is a specific term referring to the hour of his death and resurrection. These tell us that this sign points to the end time, specifically, to the marriage feast of the Lamb. This wedding points to that wedding. This celebration foreshadows that celebration. This joy points to that joy. While Jesus made 120 to 180 gallons of the best wine, when his hour comes, then the feast and wine and celebration will be so much greater that this celebration as heaven is greater than earth. Isaiah 25 prophecies the reality of this coming celebration.
On a secondary note, we must not read the interaction of Jesus and Mary as a rebuke or a mild rebuke. And we must not read Jesus word's as saying it is not time for a miracle. Mary and Jesus are not talking past each other. The literal translation of the Greek is: (Interrogative)(Who? Which? or What?) followed by "to me and to you." - Indicating a shared interest, not misunderstanding.
