The High Priestly prayer of the Lord Jesus in which He prayed that all those who are His "may be one" has been, is being, and will be fulfilled.
We might ask, "how is is it that we, His people, may be one?" When we look for true unity what are we looking for? Should we look to the visbile church, with its denominations, its committees, and organisations? Should we be counting in those who are who are on the so-called 'liberal' wing of the church, those who deny the basic fundamentals of the faith, the creation, the virgin birth, the deity of Christ, His miracles, and His glorious resurrection?
Ought we not to see that Christ was also praying for something very special, something less man-made, not of human origin, not a unity brought about by a committee? Yes, indeed, true spiritual unity is only effected in Christ.
What then for us? Where do we fit in? How do we demonstrate a true spiritual union with the Lord Jesus Christ? How indeed do we show that we are brethren, as we in local churches continue to live out our Christian lives? True unity for such as are Christ's is already here. Let us look to our Saviour and Lord as he strengthens our bonds of love for Him and each other. |
