The rite of circumcision marked the physical descendants of Abraham, but it also conveyed a redemptive significance, typifying the regenerating work of the Spirit. The holiness that the ceremonial law prescribed is now achieved thru the sacrificial death of Jesus. In faith union with Him, the New Covenant believer is released from Old Covenant ceremonial forms because we have the reality: the regenerating, sanctifying gift of the Holy Spirit. The implications of these truths were catastrophic in the early, Jewish church. Many desired the Gentiles to trust in Jesus AND to be circumcised in order to be justified. Paul adamantly stood against this attack against the grace of God. The meeting of the apostles & elders of the Jerusalem church settled this issue (in principle). As the gospel spread to the Gentiles, they were not to be required to be ritually circumcised because their faith evidenced that their hearts had already been circumcised by the Spirit.
