Our survey of the significance of circumcision brings us to consider the ministry of John the Baptist. He calls forth the believing remnant to prepare them for the Messiah. Although John does not explicitly speak of circumcision, this remnant has the traits of those circumcised of heart as prophesied in the OT prophets. Jesus mentions circumcision once - in Jn 7:22,23. There He teaches that circumcision, like the Sabbath, has a redemptive purpose depicted in Jesus' healing ministry. In the early church, it was Stephen who 1st grasped the dual significance of circumcision. His defense before the Sanhedrin concludes with his charge that they are uncircumcised in heart. The church then contends with whether or not Gentiles should be circumcised. God teaches Peter that all men are cleansed by faith in Christ & raises up Paul to champion the gospel of justification by faith alone apart from the works of the law.
