I suspect there are few if any agonies humans can experience in this life as severe as the agony of discovering that your spouse has committed adultery. So when god declares (as He does here in James) that IN HIS EYES, some believers are committing ADULTERY AGAINST HIM, it should cause us to sit up and take notice. The Lord Jesus Christ has won our hearts with His love. He has redeemed us out of slavery to sin and bondage to Satan at great cost. He has sought us and bought us. He has wooed us to Himself by His Holy Spirit. He is pictured in Scripture as the BRIDEGROOM, and His church is pictured as HIS BRIDE. The Lord is warning us here that if we become so enamored with the things of this life that we covet, lust, scheme, fight and war to get what we so highly value (pleasure, comfort, wealth, respect, prestige, adulation, recognition, beauty, power, sensual gratificationn, etc.) we are in God's eyes, committing adultery. And when we commit adultery, we are placing ourselves in the category of being enemies of God. "Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God." (James 4:4). Because, "I, the Lord your God, am a JEALOUS GOD." (Exodus 20:5) Imagine, husband, you arrive home from work and your wife says: "We need to talk. You know how I've said this relationship has become boring to me. You remember Bob Cosmos, from high school? We saw him at the last reunion. He and I are having an affair. I hope that doesn't change our relationship." How do you respond, husband? YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH YOUR WIFE IS ONE THAT DOES NOT PERMIT RIVALS. In a very proper way, you are jealous of your wife's affections. So is the Lord.
