The story is told of a Springfield, Illinois neighbor of Abraham Lincoln looking out his door to see Lincoln pasing by with his two sons, both of whom were crying loudly. "What's the matter with the boys?" asked the neighbor. "Just what is the matter with the whole world!" answered Lincoln. "I have three walnuts, and each boy wants two!" "Where do wars and fights come from among you?" asks James. "Do they not come from your desires for pleasure that war in your members?" It is easy to see this in international affairs. How many wars could be traced to the DESIRES in the hearts of those in power----desires for more territory, more resourses, an ocean port, for prominence, for revenge, etc. But note: James is writing, primarily, not to world leaders, but to first century Christians. James is suggesting that quarrels and disputes among Christians often spring from our own desires which are "soldiering" or "campaigning" within us. Our own desires for pleasure are "warring" within us, fighting for gratification. "You lust and do not have." "You MURDER and COVET and CANNOT OBTAIN." Now---you may be thinking, "I've never murdered anyone." But clearly, we can violate the sixth commandment without actually taking a life. This sermon looks at the way even Christians "fight and war and murder and covet,"----the damage it does to Christ's name and His church, and what we can do about it.
