Jesus knew that his disciples were ready to make a profession of faith in him, so he took advantage of the controversy about his person to ask them about what others thought and what they thought. Simon's reply spoke volumes about Jesus in his role as Messiah and about his person as the God/man. It also said a great deal about Simon, for such a profession states that one's life is built around the person of Jesus. Anyone who has this faith is hugely privileged, both in knowing Christ and in being the object of the Father's love. Jesus' person and work is the foundation of the church and as long as we are on that foundation we cannot be moved (only when parts of the church deny the faith will Satan be able to destroy them). Those who teach the ways of God may be said to have the keys of heaven. The Scribes did not open the door, for the taught the people wrongly. Simon, the other apostles, and the ministry of the gospel declare God's Word. That is more than information, it is God's judgement, so that everyone who believes is saved, and those who do not are damned. Preaching is more than giving information, it is conveying God's verdict; in that sense is is binding and loosing, and is as true in heaven as it is in the church here.
