God uses exhortations to challenge His own to discard the worthless things of this life and world that only hinder us from running the race set before us. Our challenge is to endure to the finish line. We realize that God uses often stern but loving child-training and discipline to ensure our success in the race.
In verses 12–17, the apostle admonishes the flagging saints to (1) active faith (vv. 12, 13) based on Isaiah 35:3-8; (2) pursuing peace and holiness (v. 14); and (3) a solemn warning to not fall out of the race and miss the goal, becoming a "root of bitterness" (Deut. 29:18 and following, a barren and worthless field) or cast away divine privilege for temporary gratification of the flesh.
