Here in Egypt there is a definite lack of fuel for running furnaces, and as such they had to rely on what was at hand. What they would do was to take clay from the river and mix straw into it and then place the clay into forms to shape the clay into bricks and then place the wet clay/straw mixture into the hot Egyptian sun to dry out. If the clay was just placed out into the hot sun to dry they would be in danger of failing due to a lack of any natural strength. That is the reason for mixing straw into the clay is to give the finished product strength and durability, without that straw having been mixed thoroughly in the dried clay would crumble. The straw would also allow the drying clay to dry more evenly and slowly which would counteract the effects that the other contaminates that naturally came along with the clay would have on the drying process that would put the finished bricks in danger. For the Christian life we are a great deal like those clay bricks. In fact we are human clay and we lack any natural strength that is needed in this world to do the job that we are being called upon by our maker, Jesus Christ. He has to add to us and mix into our lives the spiritual straw of faith. Not one of us is perfect, in fact it is a lifelong process we are undergoing to be made ready for our final resting place of Heaven. Where we get into trouble is when we let this world go to work on us and wear us down! In essence take away our faith.
