The church at Sardis was in big trouble. Christ began His message to them with stinging words of condemnation and no commendation. They had caved in to the pressure from world in its opposition to Christ. They had failed in their responsibility to be the "pillar and support" of the truth by modifying the Gospel. They had a reputation of being a living and active Truth center and carrying on the ministry of the Gospel but that was history. Compromise and conformity to the world had left them nothing but a facade. External conformity and minimal commitment had left them dead in Christ's evaluation.
He gave them five commands to correct the issues for which they were condemned. Should they continue their ways they would face grave consequences.
Following the commands, He gave words of encouragement and a promise to the few true believers in the church that they are individually secure in their relationship with Him and hope of being with Him.
Such warnings are made applicable to all His churches, throughout all church history, as He again closed with the words that “he who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.'â€
