Theme: Despite the shame of the cross, Jesus is given a royal burial by His faithful followers which points to the exaltation of His resurrection. In vv. 50-53, we read about Joseph and the burial. We learn how the Spirit gave him courage to ask for the body of Jesus, and though he was a wealthy man with influence and power, his heart was set on God's kingdom. In application, we should ask God for boldness in our faith, and set our affections on God and His Kingdom. In vv. 54-55, we read of the women and the preparation for Jesus' burial. They had deep devotion to Christ, and the Lord's law. In application, we need to express our love to Christ. In conclusion, we are thrilled to know that though Jesus died and was buried, the grave was not able to keep him. Death could not hold him. He would rise on the third day. His death on the cross was filled with wrath, agony, and shame, but his burial was royal. For the King arose. Let us seek to be faithful followers of Jesus like Joseph of Arimathea, Mary Magdalene, Joanna, and Mary the mother of James. |
