Tim Keller observes that there are two ways to read the Bible. One is merely taking it as a collection of moral stories that you must emulate. If you read the Bible like that, it will crush you. There is another way to read it. The New Testament says Jesus Christ is the true Israel, the true Adam, the true Moses. He is the true David. The Bible is not just a set of stories about how you ought to live. It is a plan of salvation that Jesus Christ fulfilled. He is the one person who did everything God asked of Adam and the patriarchs. He is the ultimate Prophet, Priest and King. He did everything we should have done so when we believe in him, that active obedience is imputed to us and we're saved. He dies on the cross. He gets the curse; we get the blessing. Everything in the Bible is about Jesus. The message is not "live like this" but "you have been saved in and through Christ even though you can't live like this!" Now out of grateful worship and the power of God, we can begin to live like this.
