We are grateful for another opportunity to come to the Lord's Table. As we prepare our hearts to come to the Supper, I want to open up a controversial text from the book of Hebrews. The bulk of this passage is a severe warning to the people of God, but it closes with a remarkable word of encouragement – and with that I will conclude and apply the sermon. This warning was directed toward those professing believers who were seriously considering returning to the Old Covenant observances. But it would apply to any professing believer who would be considering departing from Christ. After briefly highlighting the warning, I develop the author's words of encouragement and exhortation. However, the real assurance comes forth from his declaration about the perseverance of the true believer – they will surely endure to the end and be saved. I apply this truth by emphasizing the certainty of the believer's ultimate salvation. My intent is to prepare you to come to the Lord's Supper in a profitable manner by reminding you of what Jesus accomplished for His people. May the Lord be pleased to bless His word to our hearts!
