Some of them were dying from merciless working conditions and malnutrition. Escape was impossible; if they could withstand the -70 degree C (-96F)temperatures, they were tracked down by trained dogs. If they could evade the dogs, paid local villagers would seek them out and bring them back. If they could avoid all of these pitfalls, they still had impossibly vast expanses of wasteland to cover, which would certainly spell their death. Should they somehow make it to safety, the authorities were very quick to sniff them out and send them back to a more severe camp. Sometimes, in order to keep death figures lower, the authorities would release groups of feeble prisoners just before they died, leaving them to die in silent misery at home.
Such was the life of a slave in a Siberian prison camp. Such is the existence of a sinner trapped in his sin. There is no way of escape. Nothing he can do will release him from the eternal misery.
In Romans 3:21-25 we see a glorious rescue. Suppose a high ranking official came to a prison camp and ordered a prisoner freed immediately, and it was done. So is the rescue of Jesus Christ. Only, He remained in the camp in your place and died where you should have died. He is the Rescuer from the most crushing, cruel slavery; slavery to sin. The glorious truth is that He can free you as you listen to this message!
