Covetousness is a deadly serious sin. "Thou shalt not covet" rates as one of the top ten commandments. Covetousness is near the very root of all sin -- murder, adultery, theft, dishonoring of parents, abortion, divorce, wars, our massive debt, etc. It is incompatible with Christianity. It is not even to be named among us and is worthy of church discipline. It incites the wrath of God, and shuts one out of the kingdom of God. And yet we hardly hear a word about it in our society and in the church. We openly admit we are covetous by our contstant complaining about what we want and don't have. We unwittingly acknowledge our greed when we complain about the rich and the top two percent and fairness, and yet we feel no guilt about being covetous. We need a wake up call. Jesus told us to beware of greed and be on guard against every form of it. Are we?
