After the blessing of the Gentile outreach, Paul and Barnabas are pursued by controversy. Christians should never expect a time of long-lasting peace. There will also be difficulties that are encountered as the Lord's servants go about their labours. In this situation it was the effort of some teachers to add works to the doctrine of salvation by grace. Paul would not allow such teaching to circulate unchallenged because it detracted from what the Lord Jesus had achieved on the cross. There is nothing to be added to it.
History proves that men throughout the ages have been tempted to add to the truth. This was the case with the Judaizers of Paul's day. Here they taught the need of circumcision and observance of the ceremonial law as necessary to be saved. There are still additions that people make today, such as tongues-speaking or acceptance to modern prophets and apostles in order to have the blessing of God. But all these additions mean that the gospel is weakened and then lost. With this loss, there is also a loss of assurance for the believer. We need to be free of ‘additives' and rely solely on Christ.
