INTRO: We are considering the subject mentioned by Jesus in His criticism of the Church at Perrgamos. They were tolerating two troublesome doctrines and we were looking at the doctrine of Balaam and considered the history of this doctrine. This is in my estimation a very important doctrine for us to understand because it has been a problem ever since the age represented by Perrgamos was entered. I gave you a second assignment on this doctrine and it was to try to settle in your minds what you think this doctrine is and whether we are affected by it today.
We saw that just before Israel entered the land of Canaan, they needed to pass through Moab, and Balak, king of Moab wanted Balaam to curse Israel. Balaam was not able to curse them but personally counseled Balak how to defeat Israel. He said you can’t do it by war, let me tell you how to do it, and that is our subject now: just what is the doctrine of Balaam?
