In reflecting on this passage, I found myself drawn to vss 30-33. Here is the great missionary heart of the Apostle Paul pleading with others to join him in his struggle, in his ministry, by praying to God for him. Here is instruction on how to pray for missionaries. As I thought about Paul's prayer requests, I began to recognize there is a sense in which Romans is a missionary letter. While Paul did not plant the church at Rome and it's not clear to us who did, Rome was the capital and the heart of the Empire. People streamed in and out of that city to and from every known nation on earth. The church in Rome was an international church, and Paul was called to be the Apostle to the Nations. I want to get to How to Pray for Missionaries, but first I want to place these verses into their missionary context within this letter. In this letter we find (1) the missionary motive; (2) the missionary message; (3) the biblical missionary method; (4) the missionary strategy; and finally, (5) the missionary prayer.
