Paul has to tell the Galatians what they do not want to hear: that if they continue in their abandonment of the gospel of salvation by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone, then they will be cut off from Christ altogether. They will be severed from Christ, and the main point Paul makes in this passage is that those who believe they can be justified by their own obedience are cut off from the saving work of Christ because salvation can only be received by faith alone, not by faith plus works. And this is still so relevant for us today because there is in every one of us an ever so subtle tendency to think that our obedience, our goodness, our righteousness contributes something to our salvation, and the warning of this passage is that such thinking will sever us from the saving work of Christ.
