Here we find Solomon, as he does so often in this work of wisdom, a gift to the people of God, "pushing the antithesis" by asking questions that reside in all of our hearts as we observe the things around us, namely the repetition found in nature (sun, wind, sea). It is uncomfortable and easy for us to drag Solomon down into a nihilistic perspective, but that is of no interest to him then, and should not be what we do today. Not only do the experiences of men reflect the vanity of life, but also creation itself repeats over and again its same actions day after day after day. Rather than casting off the monotony as something to be shunned, we are to see that by embracing the Lordship of Christ Jesus, brings redemption to each and every day.
