The seven letters were written to seven literal churches in existence at the time of John’s exile on Patmos where he received the revelation. These represent the spiritual condition of all churches in existence down through our day and will through the duration of the church age. Seven characteristics found in each letter include: 1) the identity of the recipient; 2) the Sender of the letter drawn from characteristics given of Christ from the description recorded in the beginning vision; 3) a knowledge of each church’s spiritual condition; 4) Christ’s evaluation of each church based on His first-hand knowledge; 5) a command is given; 6) a call to pay attention; and 7) promises to the overcomer to be elaborated on as the revelation concludes. Christ’s evaluation is essentially the history of the church throughout the church age. With these it becomes very clear that each and every individual church will give an account to Jesus Christ, the Head of the church and the what basis of that evaluation is.
