INTRO: We have been away for a while and I had come to a break in the series on the subtle undoing of the fear of the Lord, having finished two messages on the subject of unconditional grace. Because of the present distress we have found ourselves in, rather than continuing those messages I decided to rewrite a message I did some 10 years ago which I called "Habakkuk's Secret To The Valley Of Depression." One writer says the name Habakkuk means, 'the wrestler.' That would make sense with the text we are going to consider this morning.
It seems that life has its share of disappointments; its share of valleys; its share of things that want to bring discouragement. And so, this morning I want to speak to you about Habakkuk’s secret to the valley of depression. Habakkuk gives us this secret in a little book that carries his name. You see, Habbakuk lived in a time of national and spiritual depression. In our country and in the North American church we also face both a national and spiritual decline. In Habakkuk's day, the law was powerless and justice was lacking; wickedness abounded on every hand and there was no fear of God. And Habbakuk, a prophet, could see the handwriting on the wall; Judah would be punished by God. And so Habbakuk, like many other prophets, found himself in circumstances that any prophet would dread. But Habakkuk, no matter how dark things got, was not going to let those circumstances rob him of his joy in the Lord.
