Justification by faith alone is indeed the doctrine upon which the church stands or falls. In this sermon, we consider the profound differences between Roman Catholic theology and historic Protestant theology. The confession booth, purgatory, sacraments, assurance of salvation, etc. -- all of these errors in Catholicism flow from a false doctrine of justification. After considering what scripture says about justification, we consider practical application. Those who struggle with assurance of salvation should fix their hope on the righteousness of Christ, not on their own sanctification. If they fix their hope on their sanctification, then they are no different from the Catholic for whom assurance is impossible and even "arrogant." We also consider this subject from a spiritual warfare perspective. We are to put on the breastplate of righteousness in our battle against the evil one. What does this mean? We must think about and ponder and meditate on our righteousness in Christ. In doing so, we will be able to extinguish the fiery darts of accusation hurled at us by the evil one.
