Thesis: The Bible is clear that Christians are to be unified, but it prescribes what must be the basis for that unity.
We are not to be ecumenical, but unified because the one true church has :
1. One Body (v.4) * All persons equal at cross. There is one church, not many * Instead of unifying on work of Christ, too often members make much of minor differences of one another
2. One Spirit (v.4) * Spirit's job is to testify of Christ - unify believers about his person * Galatians commands believers to live and walk by the Spirit
3. One Hope (v.4) * Biblical "hope" is a noun - full surety of what Christ has done and living according to it * Living a life reflective of Colossians 3
4. One Lord (v.5) * There are NOT many paths to Jesus. There is only one true gospel (work of Christ)
5. One Faith (v.5) * Jude 3 -- the body of beliefs about Jesus and his work is the one true Faith
6. One Baptism (v.5) * Spirit or water, application is same -- identifying with Christ's death and ressurection * #1 identity for each person is not ethnicity, nationality, political party, etc but believer or unbeliever
7. One God (v.6) * Live as if God were on the throne - His will, His plans, His desires * Believers that deny self daily as commanded, would all unite in God's will
CONCLUSION: Christians should actively pursue unity based on Christ's work to build his one true Church.
