Solomon’s teaching that sexual pleasure is to be found always, continually, in legitimate marriage between one man and one woman seems obvious to us. Yet a glance both at history and at the trajectory of our current culture shows that of all the truths in the Bible, few have been so universally attacked and/or disregarded. Solomon, of course, wrote in a context that looked a lot more like decadent late Qing China than like a settled bourgeois existence. He grew up the son of a mother who was just one of the women in the harem, and he duplicated those conditions in his own family life. Yet as the Japanese oligarchs so clearly saw, the way of monogamy really is the best way — not just for state building, but also for a good time in bed. Brothers and sisters, we don’t want antiquated decadence. We don’t want the sexual perversion that bills itself as the wave of the future. We want to delight sexually in our wives in godly marriage precisely because we must give an account to God.
