What is your version of freedom? The question matters very much. For instance Psalm 2 describes the endless antagonism between the world's version of freedom and happiness and freedom according to the kingdom of God. What we are witnessing in our country is a tearing apart of the social fabric according to different versions of freedom and happiness. This is why democracy must eventually fail: if the government is of the people, by the people, and for the people--and the people have increasingly different versions of freedom the divided house must eventually fall. But we have bigger fish to fry than trying to preserve democracy. Our version of freedom is a huge factor relative to the kingdom of God. True freedom is giving expression to one's true nature. This passage from James refers to the "royal law of liberty" First of all, as something Christians are obligated to keep (Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself): Second, The character and calling of God motivate us to keep the royal law. Third, God's children find true freedom (liberty) and joy (the statues of the Lord are right REJOICING THE HEART) in fulfilling the Royal law. There is nothing whimsical or wasted about the commandments of the law: each one reflects some facet of the Divine nature....if the law is to express the whole nature of the lawgiver, then each single precept has its place. To say that one of the commands, impartiality in this case, does not apply to me is to say that there is some aspect of the divine nature of God which does not matter, as far as I am concerned. Probably many believers are not keeping the royal law. It is taking a serious toll on individuals and congregations.
