With authority, Jesus commanded demons to exit men and enter swine. With authority, Jesus muzzled a tempest, saying, “peace, be still.” With authority, Jesus silenced an adulteress’s accusers. But, you know, divine authority does not always appear as we expect. Divine authority often seems too permissive to us, allowing evil to have its way. To us, divine authority may seem silent, perhaps even absent. “My kingdom is not of this world.” In the moments before His crucifixion, Christ endured humiliation and shame. He suffered physical anguish and emotional abuse. Jesus bore relational pain as no other person ever has, being rejected by all. Incredibly, He did so all the while He had authority over the very people inflicting His pain. Why? For love’s sake. Let Calvary remind us that it takes more power to love, than to exert sheer force of might or rhetoric.
