A Roman crucifixion was said to be the most horrifying death imaginable, so cruel that no Roman citizen was permitted to be executed via a cross. So it is shocking to me that our Lord looked from His cross in sheer agony, saw His mother, and made sure she would be cared for in his absence by John. What strength of love! And it makes me wonder what else Jesus saw from His cross. The gospel writers tell us that Jesus, despite unspeakable suffering, was very much aware of the events unfolding around Him, and even the actions of people near His cross. What our Lord saw – and knew -- tells us much about people’s responses to the cross even today.
