It was 25 sermons and some seven months ago that we began working our way systematically through the ten words given by God on Mt. Sinai. We have seen the depth and power and beauty, the utter rightness, of this law. We have seen how it reflects the Logos who wrote it with His finger and spoke it to His people. We have seen how God's act of redemption is the law's first word, just as "neighbor" is its last word. This morning, I want to show you that the tenth commandment sums up the law by highlighting the reality that not only is it wrong to do wrong; it is also wrong to want wrong. We'll talk about that in terms of lawless desire, including greed and envy. But I want to end by discussing how envy naturally leads to a demand for a scapegoat, a demand which God Himself supplied by sending His Son. We'll end our survey of the law on this note: The cross of Christ is the ultimate and final negation of envy, and thus of covetousness and of every sin. Let's dive in.
