From Athens, Paul proceeded south to Corinth, the provincial capital of Achaia. Corinth, like Athens, was a leading city of the region with a large population, but Corinth was distinguished by its commercial enterprises and activity rather than its intellectual and philosophical pursuits. Athens was the cultural center of the Greco-Roman world; Corinth was one of its main centers of commerce. Luke doesn't explain Paul's decision to go to Corinth, but he does indicate that it was Christ's design that he do so. Corinth was prosperous and affluent, and so a place given to every human desire and delight. Corinth was infamous for its debauchery and licentiousness - a place many would conclude God had rejected and given over to itself. But not so; Christ was gathering to Himself a global people, and that included a multitude taken from Corinth, the very "belly of the beast."
