Corinth provided unique challenges and obstacles to the ministry of the gospel. True, its synagogue community repudiated and opposed Paul's gospel for the same reasons that the Jews everywhere did. But Corinth was a bustling and prosperous city; money and goods flowed through it like the tide daily filling and emptying its ports. Corinth's people were completely preoccupied with serving its commercial enterprise and pursuits, whether as slaves, workers, or wealthy merchants and businessmen. Even the city's religious interests served its commercial ones. It was into this frenetic and carnally consumed environment that Paul brought his gospel of forgiveness and life through a crucified and risen Savior. No wonder it appeared foolish to the Corinthians: They understood power, prestige and significance; where were those things in relation to a crucified Jew, and a Jew of no consequence at that? Moreover, this message was being proclaimed by a man who himself was of no consequence - a man possessing no money, no status, no influence and no authority. How would such a man even be heard above the din of Corinth's bustling life? It's easy to see how Paul would have come to Corinth with a deep sense of inadequacy and trepidation. But he knew - and Jesus affirmed to him - that the gospel, being God's power for salvation - would prevail, even in that place. Nothing is impossible with the Spirit of God.
