We saw the signs of immaturity and the Hebrew writer's definition of maturity last week. This sermon is about resolving to press on toward maturity. That's what the writer says here: We will press on toward maturity, if God allows us to do so. May that be the case, brothers and sisters. The way to grow toward maturity is to build on the foundation of Christian basics. That's why the author reminds us of half a dozen things that he explicitly says he's not going to talk about. Why bring them up if you're not going to talk about them? Because they are the foundation of maturity, and to grow up in the way you need to grow up requires that you have all six of these present in your life. So, brothers and sisters: resolve with me that you will grow up to habitual moral discernment, an unerring ability to spot the right path and follow it, through God's help and building on our knowledge of basic Christian teaching.
