The names and titles given to Jesus by the diving providence of God describe the very essence of this second person of the Trinity. The very name Jesus, or Joshua, speaks of the promise to save His people from their sins. The name also describes the ministry of the Lord in restoring the inheritance of His people and redeeming their worship. Christ is the Greek equivalent to the Hebrew word Messiah and means the Anointed One. An anointing was common in the old dispensation to prophets, priests and kings such as Elisha, Aaron and David. The anointing of the Lord Jesus Christ combines all three offices under one head into one powerful Messiah strong to save. Other titles are Son of Man, Son of God, and Lord; and all of these titles speak of His divinity and authority.
