Nearing the end of his life and ministry, Paul's correspondence to Timothy reveals his steadfastness to Jesus Christ.
As he writes, he is in dire straights and is anticipating martyrdom as heavy persecution of Christians was being incited by Nero. He would like to see Timothy before he dies but is not sure he will arrive in time. He writes to encourage, challenge, and remind Timothy of matters concerning his ministry. He includes advice for his dealing with issues arising in the Church. As he remains committed to the Gospel of his Lord and Savior, his counsel to Timothy for dealing with people in the Church will be that ministry supercedes human relationships. There can be no compromise of the message of the Gospel, nor in the truthful, accurate teaching of the Word of God.
In the ministry Timothy has had, going as Paul's representative to church's he couldn't get to, Timothy had proven himself trustworthy and enduring. He had faced tests and challenges as Paul's companion in the ministry. Those tests have prepared Timothy for the responsiblities he will be assuming and the pressure that will come with them.
Paul's counsel to Timothy is timeless in it's value to the Church, its leadership, and ongoing ministry of the Gospel.
