All of us need some help to understand the Bible but none of us needs an authority that replaces it. Jesus condemned Pharisees for adding to Scripture and condemned Sadducees for denying God's power in it. Sixteen centuries later, Martin Luther told those who accused him of heresy that his conscience was captive to the Word of God. He could not bow to an authority that changed its meaning. We need our Bibles, open and loved, because God speaks to us by what is written there. We need to let its light shine on everything else and not let everything else shape our approach to the Bible.
