This year marks the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, and this week we begin a new series on 'The Five Solas of the Reformation'. In the sixteenth century, each of these five statements countered a particular doctrine or practice of the church. Today they stand as fundamental tenets of the Protestant church. Whilst our salvation is not dependent upon how well we might know the Five Solas - whether we know of them at all, can name them, or explain them - the Five Solas help declare and define the salvation we have in Christ. They tell us: how it is we are justified - by faith alone; where our righteousness before God comes from - Christ alone; how we came to such saving faith - by grace alone; what authority we should look to for matters of faith - Scripture alone; and who is responsible for our faith and salvation - God alone - it is all to his glory! Our aim in this series is not merely to inform ourselves of Church History or Reformed Theology, but rather to refresh us in the sure knowledge of the love of God and the joy of our salvation in Christ.
