The Reformation was a time of doctrinal and ecclesiastical reform. More significantly, it was a time when the Bible was brought to the ears of the common man. People were brought out of the deadness of religion into the glory of being the children of God. In Romans 10, we see a picture of the progress the Word made during the Reformation
1. Availability of the Word (10:4-8) You don't have to plumb the depths or scale the heights to find Christ. Christ is near in the Word and the preaching of the gospel. The Reformation brought the gospel near again.
2. Necessity of the Word (10:9-14) Faith is essential. Preaching is essential. The Reformation brought back the centrality of preaching. It is a troubling sign when churches lessen the importance of preaching
3. Simplicity of the Word (10:15) We have a message that shows the way to peace with God for sinners who are at enmity with God. Reformation preaching had a message that was simple at its core.
4. Authority of the Word (10:15) This is seen in the word 'sent'. The Reformation preaching was bold and fearless as it declared the authoritative Word of God
5. Beauty of the Word (10:15) The feet bring a message which is beautiful
6. Generosity of the Word (10:12) The Reformation made known the Lord's riches
7. Sovereignty in the Word (10:20) The Reformation showed God's sovereignty. It is seen in the truth that people who are not seeking the Lord are the ones that actually find him. By nature we do not seek Christ, but by the mercy of the new birth we come to seek him
8. Responsibility to the Word (10:21) God still holds those that do not find him responsible for their sin.
