In Hosea 4, Israel are accused of having no faithfulness, no love and not acknowledging the Lord as their God. This week, in Hosea 6-8 the accusations continue as the Lord addresses the second of these - their lack of love or mercy. This is seen in their superficial and syncretistic worship, their hot temper, and their alliance with other nations instead of seeking the Lord's protection. However, amidst the accusations and warnings of impending judgment, we continue to see the Lord's unfailing love for his people. Like a despairing parent, the Lord cries out, "What shall I do with you, O Ephraim?" Except, with the Lord, there is the always hope, never despair. There is always the promise of God, and he is forever faithful to his covenant people. Even the chastisement Israel receive from the Lord is his faithfulness in action, with the view to restoration and healing. In what might seem to be impossible and hopeless situations in our own hearts and our own days, do not despair - with the Lord there is always hope. He who promised is faithful, and he gives and he gives, more and more grace.
